Exciting Italian Masterpieces exhibition in Rome with works by Bernini & Caravaggio

From Carravaggio to Bernini: 17th century Italian Masterpieces from the Spanish Royal Collections

An exhibition running at the Scuderie del Quirinale between the 14th of April to the 30th July 2017 displays a selection of paintings from the Spanish Royal Court of the 17th century, reflecting the close political ties between Spain and Italy during that period.

The Hapsburg dynasty were given paintings from Italian rulers as diplomatic gifts hoping to do favour with Spain, whose Italian territories- the Vice Kingdom of Naples and State of Milan- had been key in the political complexities of Italy from the 16th century onwards.

The expo contains both paintings and sculptures such as ‘Lot and his daughters’ by Guercino and ‘The Conversion of Saul’ by Guido Reni, donated to Philip IV by Prince Ludovisi on order to ensure Spanish protection of the tiny state of Piombino. This exciting exhibition also boasts a rarely seen in public Bernini criucifix from the Monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial, Carravaggios Salome, and five works by José de Ribera. These masterpieces are a rare selection chosen for their historic and artistic value, a must see and once in a lifetime opportunity to view.
